Have you ever heard of a $100 burger? The term is aviation slang for a recreational flight that consists of going to a nearby airport to eat, then flying back home. The $100 refers to the (approximate) cost of fuel.
It’s sort of like a Sunday afternoon drive, but with wings. Pilots fly into neighboring airfields, usually two hours or less from their home airport, to enjoy the scenery and some good food.
The Central Coast is a great area to take part in this long standing aviation tradition with great restaurants at many of our neighboring fields.
Here’s a few of our favorites:
- Typhoon – Santa Monica airport (SMO). Great Thai food with excellent views of the runway. Open for lunch and dinner.
- Pepper Garcia’s – Santa Maria airport (SMX) – Serving delicious Tex-Mex cuisine. Be careful, portions are huge! Lunch and dinner.
- Waypoint Cafe – Camarillo airport (CMA) – Good ol’ fashioned burgers, fries, milkshakes and more. Breakfast and lunch.
